Hospital of the Holy Cross
Work on the Hospital de la Santa Creu began in 1401; it was made up of four blocks surrounding a cloister, still to be seen between the streets Carme and Hospital.
At the end of the 19th century, the building became small for the needs and, thanks to a donation, was transfered to new facilities and got a new name, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.
Walking towards the cloister, visitors pass the 17th-century Casa de Convalecencia (convalescence house) and the 18th-century Academia de Medicina (medicine academy).
There's still a lot going on here, for nowadays the old hospital building houses the Catalan Women's Institute, the Catalan Studies Institute, the City Library, the National Library of Catalonia and the Massana Art School.
