Saint Andrew Chapel
Although it was originally erected in the 12th century, during the reign of king Sancho I, to commemorate the first conquest of the town over the Moors, the actual Ermida de Santo André probably dates from the 16th century.
Far from the city's historical center, the best way to get there is by Rua Conselheiro Menezes or Estrada Nacional 121; the chapel, with its whitewashed façades, rises alone in a sunny square full of trees.
Of longitudinal shape, it displays a cylindrical buttress on each side, ending in geometrical cones, and has only one nave with a semi-circular vault and arches.
The walls of the main chapel are entirely decorated with 16th-century tiles, and at the altarpiece a colourful fresco exhibits two angels guarding the national coat of arms.
Other motives of interest are the Mannerist wood retable and the paintings portraying Saint Andrew and the Calvary.
