Montjuïc Mountain
With its height of 173 metres (600 feet), the Muntanya de Montjuïc (jewish hill) stands over the southern part of Barcelona, next to the sea.
In the Middle Ages, Montjuïc was uninhabited, though the nearby area of Miramar became part of the Jewish quarter.
In 1607, the first path to the summit was opened and, in 1640, during the War of the Segadors, a fortress was built to help resist Felipe IV, which later became the Montjuïc Castle.
For centuries, Montjuïc has been the most popular park in the city for spending a free day and picking wild herbs.
More recently, several sports venues were built at the hilltop for the 1992 Olympics, which gather huge crowds of visitors.
